Dried pineapples, reduced in size: which HTSUS subheading?

April 2026 examClassificationQuestion 31 of 80

Of the four choices below, which is the best CLASSIFICATION for dried pineapples that are reduced in size, suitable for immediate consumption, and imported in small packages rather than in bulk?

How to get there

1. Find the heading by its terms (GRI 1)

Heading 0804 names pineapples outright, and it covers them dried as well as fresh:

So dried pineapples belong in heading 0804. There's no need to go past GRI 1 at the heading level.

2. Choose the subheading (GRI 6)

GRI 6 applies the same logic at the subheading level. Under 0804.30 (Pineapples):

The pineapples in the question are reduced in size, so the answer is 0804.30.60.

Trap!
The trap: the question adds "imported in small packages rather than in bulk," which points you toward the packaging split. But packaging only divides pineapples that are not reduced in size (.20 vs .40). Once the fruit is reduced in size, packaging no longer matters.

Why the other choices are wrong

A) 0801.19.01: heading 0801 covers coconuts, Brazil nuts and cashew nuts. Pineapples aren't in it.
C) 0812.90.40: heading 0812 covers fruit "provisionally preserved, but unsuitable in that state for immediate consumption." These pineapples are suitable for immediate consumption, so 0812 is out.
D) 0813.40.90: heading 0813 reads "Fruit, dried, other than that of headings 0801 to 0806." Pineapples are named in 0804, so 0813 excludes them by its own terms.
Tip
Exam tip: in Chapter 8, check the specific "fresh or dried" headings (0801–0806) before reaching for 0813. 0813 is the catch-all for dried fruit that isn't named elsewhere.
