A woven cotton bow tie: Chapter 61 or 62, and which line?

April 2026 examClassificationQuestion 34 of 80

Of the four choices below, which is the best CLASSIFICATION of a men's bow tie constructed of 100% cotton woven black fabric with gray polka dots?

How to get there

1. Knitted or woven? Woven, so Chapter 62.

Chapter 61 is limited to knitted or crocheted articles (Chapter 61 Note 1). Chapter 62 covers made-up articles of textile fabric other than knitted or crocheted ones (Chapter 62 Note 1). The bow tie is made of woven fabric, so it belongs in Chapter 62.

2. Heading 6215

It's 100% cotton, so "of other textile materials," cotton: 6215.90.0015, D.

Why the other choices are wrong

A) 6117.80.2000 and B) 6117.80.8710: Chapter 61 ("ties, bow ties and cravats" under knitted accessories). The fabric is woven, so Chapter 61 doesn't apply.
C) 6215.10.0025: the right heading, but 6215.10 is for ties of silk. This one is 100% cotton.
Trap!
Both chapters have a "ties, bow ties and cravats" line, so the description alone won't decide it. Construction decides the chapter: knit → 61, woven → 62. Then fiber content picks the subheading.
